The Spearthrower or Atlatl was man's first missile weapon. This weekend, I crafted an atlatl of my own. Suprisingly, it took very little time and material to construct. The Atlatl is nothing more than a piece of wood with a groove on one end and 2 loops on the other. When fitted with a javelin, this tool uses the mechanical advantage of added length to translate into a rough doubling of casting range for the missile.
